2013 NCEA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2013 NCEA Championships came to an exciting close on Saturday April, 20th in Waco, Texas. The western semi-finals took place Saturday morning, to decide which two teams would compete for the championship. Kansas, who entered the competition seeded second, defeated Georgia (3), 5-2 to advance to final round. Oklahoma (1) rode to victory over South Carolina (5) with a final score of 6-1. The championship bracket took place between Oklahoma and Kansas later that evening, with Oklahoma taking an impressive 4-0 lead after horsemanship. Kansas didn't give up, and earned two points in the reining, but it was not enough to steal the championship from the cowgirls.

Meanwhile, Baylor (1) took on Auburn (4), while Georgia (3) rode against South Carolina (2) in the english semi-finals. Both Auburn and Georgia rose to the occasion and defeated teams seeded ahead of them. Georgia defeated South Carolina 5-3, lead by their dominating win in fences 4-0. Auburn also defeated Baylor in a 5-3 victory, led by freshman Elizabeth Benson. Auburn and Georgia faced off the english championship. Both teams rode strong, and flat ended in a 2-2 tie. Fences was just as intense, with it coming down to the very last ride. Auburn took it, and the fences ended 2-1, giving them the championship as well.

After both the Western and Hunt Seat National Champions had been decided, a ride-off between Auburn and Georgia was needed to determine the Overall National Champion. This meant that each team picked one rider per event, to ride-off in the same head-to-head format. The order of events was flat, then horsemanship, followed by fences and finished off by reining. Auburn choose Elizabeth Benson to represent them in both english events, Griffin Knight was to ride in horsemanship, and Cheyenne Cracraft for reining. Georgia had Carly Anthony ride for both fences and flat, Paige Stawicki for horsemanship, and Mckenzie Lantz for reining. Auburn took the flat point, 194-188. Horsemanship was won by Georgia 144.5-138 and fences by Auburn 170-110. Reining was the final event, and Auburn won 143.5-138.5, making them the 2013 National Champions, as well as the Hunt Seat Champions.

Also deserving recognition from the NCEA Championships were some major upsets during the first round elimination. UT Martin (9) defeated Kansas State (8) in raw score 1122-1012. Texas A&M (10) defeated Oklahoma (7) 5-3. Most likely the biggest upset of the Championship was South Dakota (12) defeated TCU (5) in raw score 1107-1015. While UT Martin, Texas A&M and South Dakota all lost in their next matches, they proved that determination is key in surpassing expectations.
